City Shift

Context: Barahanos Byrne was commissioned by Blacktown City Council as part of their laneway’s public art program and graffiti management plan in conjunction with the Blacktown Arts It’s Our Thing (Part 3) project to create City Shift (A large-scale low-relief sculptural installation) for Mackenzie Walkway in Blacktown CBD. 

The project aims were to develop artworks for local laneways that

• improved public spaces

• helped council manage unsolicited graffiti

• were inspired by Hip Hop culture and reflected the emergent voice of the Western Sydney Hip Hop Scene.

 

The project covered:

• Field research included wide-ranging photo documentation (source material) of

• local iconic buildings and landmarks

• local people and activity

• local hip hop performers and dancers

• Extensive graphic design from original concept images through to vector files for production

• Extensive liaison with Blacktown City Council, Westpoint Staff (building owners), fabricators and other stakeholders
